Farmers’ Market Ends Season

Since May, Mona Dearborn has set aside an hour or so each Saturday morning to make her weekly trek to the Reston Farmers’ Market.

"I couldn’t do without it," said Dearborn, who walks down from the Heron House on Lake Anne to get fresh veggies and fruits. "It’s like I picked them from the garden myself."

On the market’s last day of the season, Saturday, Oct. 29, many people were out looking for their favorite winter squash, the pumpkin, although several other varieties were available as well.

Held at Lake Anne Village Center from May until the end of October for the past seven years, the market has been many people’s weekly resource for fresh vegetables, fruits, dairy products, meats and an assortment of flowers and plants.

"I come early to do all my fruit, vegetable and flower shopping for the entire week," said Virginia Keating, another Reston resident who rarely misses a week. Keating said that everyone at the market is very friendly and that many of the customers come week in and week out.

"It’s almost like a block party," said Keating.

This past year, the market offered meat and dairy products for the first time, everything from smoked ham to sausage cheese balls.
