Hearing Echoes

Local hip-hop group channels old-school rap and performs this weekend in Fairfax.

Local hip-hop group The Echo Boomers is comprised of DJ Throdown, from Falls Church, and Annandale residents Hickey and Chef Jeff. They perform a "post-Thanksgiving dance party" this Friday at TT Reynolds.

Introduce the band:

DJ Throdown is the DJ and balloon animal expert. Chef Jeff and Hickey are the emcees, and all three of us are full-time students.

How'd The Echo Boomers form?

Jeff and Hickey went to high school together, and have been rhyming together for about almost five years. They met DJ Throdown in 2003 and worked with him on and off for over a year, then he joined the group. The Echo Boomers were officially formed in fall of 2003 and have been climbing up through the local scene in Virginia since.

Describe your sound:

Underground hip-hop that harkens back to the golden age, but without the typical affected or emotional component that ruins most current indie hip-hop. It's an old-school, fun-loving vibe with an energetic and tasteful modern sound.

How is the local hip-hop scene?

The scene is definitely growing, thanks to both the shared goal within the community of performers to expand, and the support from local hip-hop fans. Performing locally has provided us with many opportunities to channel our creativity and learn how to craft a successful live show that can appeal to a diverse crowd. It is very apparent that, in this scene, you only get back what you put in, and sometimes you don't even get that.

Musical influences:

A good musician finds inspiration in all music.

Non-musical influences:

Family, friends and foes. Cartoons, literature, good and bad ideas, failure, others' success.

Most surreal moment:

Being indefinitely banished from a Fairfax venue during a show last April, for speaking out against the staff and owners for conducting their business in an unprofessional manner.

Future plans?

First, finish the new album and put it out as soon as possible. Second, finish college. Third, enter and win as many band battles as possible. Lastly, create Echo-Bots to unleash upon the earlobes of unsuspecting concert goers.
