Getting To Know ...

Profile

Gary Powers is the founder and director of The Cold War Museum, a non-profit museum dedicated to preserving the history of the Cold War. Currently, the museum features only online and traveling exhibits, but it hopes to occupy a physical space at the former Lorton Prison site. Powers and his family recently moved from their home in the City of Fairfax to the Richmond area.

Number of years in the community: In July 1992, I moved to Fairfax from Los Angeles.

Family: Jennifer Webber Powers is my wife, and our 3-year-old son is Francis Gary Powers, III.

Education: I received a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy at Cal State University in Los Angeles, a master of public administration degree from George Mason University, and a certificate of non-profit management, also from GMU.

Achievements: I have been honored as one of "Ten Outstanding Young Americans" and one of "Ten Outstanding Young Virginians" by the Jaycees. I have also received certificates of appreciation from the National Image and Mapping Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency, and was named to the list of Who's Who in Rising Young Virginians in 1991 and 1999.

Activities/interests/hobbies: Snow skiing, chess, science fiction books and coin collecting.

Favorite local restaurant or place: Lorton Nike Missile Base.

Community concerns: Historic preservation and education are my top two concerns. The Cold War Museum will help improve our community by educating area students and visitor on Cold War history and by helping to revitalize the former Lorton Prison area.

What brought you to Fairfax? I grew up in Los Angeles, but both of my parents grew up in Virginia. Mom was born in Warrenton, and dad was born in Pound, on the Kentucky border. I moved here in 1992 to get to know my family better and pursue my master's degree at GMU.

Community hidden treasure: Service organizations such as Rotary, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Civitans and community art leagues. These types of groups are the cornerstone of our community. People involved with community-based groups not only help give back to the community but also help improve our overall quality of life through their deeds and goodwill.

Personal goals? Grow the Cold War Museum into a world-class attraction that will assist with Fairfax County's revitalization efforts for the former Lorton Prison area.
