Volunteers are needed for the "Main Street is Blooming," April 15-22. The ChildrenÕs Friendship Project for Northern Ireland (CFPNI) is seeking local families to host a Protestant and Catholic youth, ages 15 to 18, in their home for four weeks this summer. To be eligible, families must provide a safe, neutral setting for the teens to get to know one another, a single bedroom for them to share and day-long supervision.
The teens participate in various activities designed to build trust, encourage cooperation and break down barriers. The majority of their time is spent getting to know each other and joining a family in its normal routine.
CFPNI is a nonpolitical, nondenominational and all-volunteer peace program aimed at building trust, understanding and friendship among the next generation of leaders in Northern Ireland.

Volunteer opportunities exist for information desk volunteers and mobile guides at Washington Dulles International Airport. A Travelers Aid volunteer must have a friendly, helpful manner and enjoy interacting with people from all over the world. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to work one three- to four-hour shift per week. Early morning, mid-morning, afternoon and evening shifts are available, with a great need for volunteers who can work evening or weekend shifts. Local families are needed to host 4-H international exchange delegates. Delegates range in age from 12 to 18, and come to Virginia for one month in the summer or for extended stays of one school year starting in August. There are also adult Japanese chaperones who need host families for two week periods this summer. Other delegates come from Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Austria, and Greece. The exchange program is sponsored by 4-H.
The Japanese summer 4-H exchange program is open to families with children 12 to 14 years old. The High School Student exchange programs will accept families without children. Volunteers don't have to already be involved with 4-H to host; just need a willingness to share your home and your world. There is no need to know a foreign language. The delegates have all studied English and are anxious to use it.

Northern Virginia Family Service needs caring people from Loudoun County to provide foster and respite homes to local neglected and abused children with special needs.
NVFSÕ Special Foster Care and Therapeutic Respite Care program currently serves 47 children with special needs.
While NVFS is proud of its work to provide temporary families for these children, the number of children who need homes is greater than the number of foster families available. The need for foster homes is especially growing in Loudoun County.
NVFS needs ethnically diverse people, young and older, married or single, blue or white collar who are willing to provide homes to children with special needs.
The typical stay for a foster child is 18 months. Children in respite care stay with their caregivers for shorter durations. The time commitment for respite parents is often only a weekend a month. Being a respite parent can be a way to see if becoming a full-time foster parent is for you.

Operation Pinecone is a grassroots organization based in South Riding consisting of volunteers who compile gift and care packages for soldiers in Iraq, as well as wounded soldiers, families and loved ones at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The Loudoun County MADD Chapter is seeking additional court monitors for Loudoun Traffic court program in which trained volunteers observe and gather data on DUI court proceedings, including arraignments, pretrial hearing, trials and sentencing. TuesdayÕs Children provides a wide range of services for Sept. 11 families including mentoring, advocacy for children, next-step life skills and leadership training for adults.
The Mentoring Program pairs these children with specially-trained adult role models who support each young personÕs emotional and developmental needs and help them build the confidence, skills and resources necessary to meet their potential. CrisisLink, the greater Washington region's only 24-hour, seven-days-a -week crisis, suicide and trauma prevention, intervention and response hotline, is seeking volunteers to take calls and respond directly to individuals in need. CrisisLinkÕs comprehensive training program provides volunteers with the necessary skills to give referrals and to help callers in crisis develop problem-solving strategies. Inova Loudoun Hospital is looking for adults to volunteer within its Chaplaincy Services department. The mission is to visit patients and help them draw upon their own spiritual resources in order to cope with their experience of illness. Volunteers are expected to attend a 14-week training program and commit several hours per week for one year visiting patients. Classes begin in September and meet on Monday evenings. The training program, now in its third year, offers mature adults an opportunity to develop personal and professional skills necessary to offer effective pastoral care in the health care setting. Good Shepherd Alliance Inc., an organization providing shelter to the homeless, is in need of lawyers with nonprofit experience and mentors for single men, women and families. The services of local electricians, painters, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, car mechanics and landscapers are needed to restore living spaces, vehicles and outdoor shelter areas. Software engineers and technicians are also needed to establish and maintain computer workstations at all shelter facilities.
