The South County Federation closed out 2006 with an easy election Tuesday night, Dec. 12, its last meeting of the year.
Four of the five current board members of the Federation were re-elected, naming Susan Fremit as president, Tim Rizer as vice president, Dan Breitenbach as secretary and John Fedorshik as corresponding secretary. Irma Clifton, who had served as treasurer for the past two years, was replaced by Gloria Bannister.
While enjoying some holiday snacks, the Federation only received one brief land-use presentation. Committee chair Calvin Smith told members of the Federation that a property owned by the Evans Group, at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Gunston Road, had requested a sound wall at the intersection, which was guaranteed in the proffers agreed to by the developer. However, the right-of-way where the wall would be built is owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation, which decided the sound wasn't great enough to require a wall.
Smith said county officials and residents alike believe that the wall is needed and have requested moving plans for the sound wall back one foot, onto land owned by the Homeowners Association and not under VDOT's control.
The resolution to support the request was passed unanimously.
OTHER BUSINESS discussed included:
* An update on the condition of Marcia Hanson, a 19-year representative in the office of Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D-Mount Vernon). Hanson was involved in a serious car crash late last month which left her hospitalized with several broken bones. Hyland said Hanson was recovering well and had been moved to a rehabilitation facility for the foreseeable future.
* Education committee chair Christine Morin reminded parents to attend the School Board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 21, and to sign up early to address the board about the Capital Improvement Plan and status of building a middle school for South County.
* Human Services committee chair Anda Ostergard thanked members of the Federation for their generosity with donations for Thanksgiving baskets. Enough baskets were delivered that extras were available and given to Rising Hope Ministry for their emergency shelter, she said. Donations of food and holiday gifts for the Christmas delivery can be dropped off Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Moose Lodge in Lorton. Anyone who chooses to "adopt" a family for the holiday can turn in their donations the following day.
* The next meeting of the South County Federation is Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the media center of South County Secondary School.
