What’s in a Road Name?

<bt>Reston Avenue is named after Reston — clearly. However, most road name origins aren’t as easy to figure out.

When traveling down Baron Cameron Avenue, it isn’t readily apparent that Lord Thomas Fairfax, who owned huge tracts of land in Northern Virginia, was the sixth baron of Cameron.

It may not be obvious at first look that Jester Court received its name because it had four lots. Since April is the fourth month of the year and the month includes April Fools Day, planners thought of jesters and thus named it Jester Court.

Many streets were named from a topographical standpoint, such as Ring Road — looks like a circle — and Handlebar Road — looks like a handlebar.

And then there are roads that were never meant to be. Temporary Road was supposed to be just that, temporary. It was marked “temporary” on maps for construction reasons. When planners made it into an actual road, the name stuck.

Take a look below at some more road name origins both strange and logical.
