Drive-By Shootings Stir Up Park

Sterling Park Shootings May Be Gang Related

Sterling Park residents woke up to a series of gunshots beginning at 1 a.m., Wednesday, July 19.

Within 30 minutes, suspects fired 30 rounds of bullets from at least two guns.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kraig Troxell said the first incident occurred on Coventry Square, where one man was shot while lying in his bed. He was taken to an area hospital and on Tuesday, was in critical but stable condition.

Suspects continued to fire their weapons, striking seven home on Aster Terrace, Holborn Court and North Argonne Avenue.

"It appears some of the homes were targeted," Troxell said. "Others were hit by a string of bullets."

THE DRIVE-BY shootings may be gang related, based on information provided by the Sheriff’s Office’s Gang Intelligence Unit.

"It appears to be gang related," Troxell said, "but we can’t confirm anything yet."

Some of the homes involved in the series of shootings were previously involved in gang activity, he added.

Loudoun County is home to approximately 12 gangs, Gang Intelligence Unit investigator Dave Zuleger said.

"The majority of the gangs in Loudoun County appear east of Route 15," he said.

Although a number of gangs exist in Sterling Park, violent gang activity rarely involves the civilian population, Zuleger said.

"Normally, it’s gang-on-gang activity," he said, "not gang-on-civilian activity."
