Tails Inc., a Chicago-based publisher of pet magazines is launching "Capital Tails," a magazine that celebrates the relationship between pets and their people, and has appointed of Alan S. Nemeth as its publisher. The inaugural issue will be available late-August.
Nemeth, an attorney by training, has been active in the pet community for many years and is a founding member of the Maryland State Bar AssociationÕs Animal Law Committee. He is a graduate of the Washington College of Law/American University; and lives in Ashburn, with his wife, Rose, and their four cats, Oliver, Drew, Daffodil and Tulip.

Achievements: I am the founding member and first chair of the Maryland State Bar Association's Section on Animal Law. The MSBA voted in June 2006 to formally authorize the creation of the Section on Animal Law. In conjunction with my work with the MSBA Section on Animal Law, I am coordinating a national group of animal law bar associations.
I am also a founding member and a director for Loved Ones Inc., a nonprofit organization with the goal to create a place for humans in need of hospice or long-term care to be able to receive the treatment they require and be able to keep their pets by their sides. And, when the time comes and the patient passes on and there is no one to care for the pets, the Loved Ones Sanctuary will care for the pets for the rest of their lives.
Family: Rose, Oliver, Drew, Sheila and Flower.
What do you like or dislike about your community?: I like the preservation of nature in the Broadlands. What I don't like is that it seems that every open space in the area is being turned into a strip mall or an office complex.
Favorite local restaurant/place: Samurai Sushi, Broadlands.
Sports Interests/Activities/Hobbies: University of Maryland basketball, N.Y. Mets and Jets and "the Boulez" [The Washington Wizards]. Also, landscaping and gardening around the house.
Community Ties: Co-owner of Pottery You Paint in Ashburn. Volunteer with the Humane Society of Loudoun County.
Community Concerns: Overdevelopment.
Community Ideas: I have a few, but here are two that are animal-related.
1. I'd like to see the Loudoun County Animal Shelter team up with the many animal rescue groups as well as businesses in a public/private partnership to open up storefront adoption centers in shopping centers around the county. The more available we make the homeless animals to the public, the more successful we'll be in finding them homes. And, perhaps, we could lessen the amount of needless killings of homeless animals.
2. Also, I'd like to see programs where we can place homeless animals, particularly cats, with residents of nursing homes, assisted living centers and senior living developments. Many studies have shown the health benefits for people with the companionship of an animal. And, we'd lighten the load of the rescue groups and shelters while reducing the need to kill the homeless animals.
Personal Goals: Seeing the Loved Ones Sanctuary come to fruition.
