Getting To Know...

Carol Smiley, a volunteer at the Fairfax City Regional Library, recently received an award from Fairfax County Public Libraries for her dedicated hours working as a volunteer. A graduate of George Mason University, Smiley enjoys traveling and founded a handbell choir. She is this week's People Profile.

Number of years in the community: 30.

Family: Husband Ronald, four grown children, six grandchildren.

Education: B.I.S. degree from G.M.U.

Current job: Pool circulation assistant at Fairfax County Public Library.

Achievements: 3,000 volunteer hours at FCPL, founder and director of a handbell choir.

Achievements/interests/hobbies: Handbells, travel, reading.

Favorite local restaurant: Any place I can get good shrimp!

What are your community concerns? Lack of public transportation in the neighborhoods other than in "rush hours."

What brought you here? U.S. Army assignment, then retired here.

What community "hidden treasure" do you think more people should know about? The many resources of the library, including the Virginia Room at the Fairfax branch.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you "grew up?" In the early 50s there were very few options for women, so I opted for teaching, but got married before finishing my degree work.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I hope that I will still be "plugging along" at the age of 75.

Personal goals: To see my grandchildren grown and married.
