<lst>The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer invites the general public to its Faith and Life Forums. These one-hour programs feature a speaker, followed by discussion relating the topic to living one's Christian faith on a daily basis. The Church of the Good Shepherd, a United Methodist church in Vienna, has published its seventh annual Devotions for Lent booklet. The booklet of daily devotionals written by members and friends of the congregation will be distributed at Ash Wednesday and other church services during Lent. As part of its Lent observance, the Church of the Good Shepherd will again host a weekly Soup, Song and Story. Beginning March 8, and continuing for each Wednesday night during Lent, soup will be served beginning at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, followed by song and story. Jewish Meditation classes are being offered at Congregation Beth Emeth, Herndon, for six sessions on Sundays through April 2. Classes provide a safe environment where students will learn meditative techniques from Jewish tradition to bring about deep relaxation and new spiritual experiences. Designed for beginners and experts. Classes meet from 7:30–9:30 p.m. The cost for all six sessions is $36 for members of Beth Emeth or any WFEL congregation; $45 for nonmembers. "Moving Toward the Center: Finding Balance in Our Lives." Weekend retreat for women. Embark on a journey of spiritual growth and exploration moving toward balance of body, mind and spirit. This retreat weekend for women will be held March 17-19 and directed by Jenny Sheetz, MA, CN, an experienced spiritual director, retreat leader and counselor. The program is open to all women, and the schedule includes time for personal prayer, group conferences, journaling, gentle exercise, meals, Sunday vigil Mass, and a balance of input, prayer and process. Julius E. Coles, president of Africare, will speak at the Northern Virginia Ethical Society on March 19 about "Africa in the New Millenium." Over the course of its history, Africare has become a leader among private charitable U.S. organizations assisting Africa. Coles will discuss the obstacles facing African development including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, inadequate crop production, overpopulation and political instability. Westmoreland Community Church, located at the corner of Westmoreland and Kirby in McLean, is an inter-denominational congregation, which began as a Southern Baptist Church but in 1978 officially changed its name to Westmoreland Community Church to better expresse the nature of its congregation: a community of Christians who gather to worship God as revealed through Christ. While officially independent of any other denomination, members come from a variety of religious traditions. A program using music, drumming, movement, song and prayer seeks to bring communities together as part of everyday life. The dances are cross-cultural using sacred phrases, chants, music and movements from many faith traditions. Efforts are to promote peace and integration within individuals and groups.
