Utica College in New York has released its dean's list, including April R. Carter, Sterling, for the fall 2005 semester. To make the list, students must achieve a GPA of 3.4 or higher and be full-time students.

4-H members in Loudoun County participated in a public speaking and presentation contest Saturday, Feb. 19. Top honors went to Amber Bryant with her presentation on Osteogenesis, Hayley Potts with her presentation on How to Write an Advertisement, and Samantha Sweitzer with her presentation on Cavies for Fancy.

The following Virginia Tech students were among those honored at the university's fall commencement ceremony, held Dec. 16, in Cassell Coliseum. The on-campus ceremony was presided by Virginia Tech president Charles W. Steger.

Virginians for the Arts re-elected Peter H. Dunning of Leesburg to a three-year term on its Board of Directors. Now in its 14th year, VFTAÕs membership includes artists, arts patrons and arts organizations. VFTAÕs mission has been to preserve the arts in the commonwealth by advocating for increased funding for the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Air Force Airman Jacob R. Nelson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Nelson is the son of Dale and Janene Nelson of Sterling. The airman is a 2004 graduate of Potomac Falls High School, Sterling.
