The Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District is accepting submissions for The Trawick Prize: Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards. The 4th annual juried art competition awards $14,000 in prize monies to four selected artists. Deadline for slide submission is Monday, April 10, and up to 15 artists will be invited to display their work from Sept. 5-Sept. 29, in downtown Bethesda at Creative Partners Gallery, located at 4600 East-West Highway.
The first place winner will be awarded $10,000; second place will be honored with $2,000 and third place will be awarded $1,000. A “young” artist whose birth date is after April 10, 1976 will also be awarded $1,000.
Each artist must submit five slides, application and a non-refundable entry fee of $25. Montgomery College is currently hosting an exhibit of contemporary pottery to showcase the talents of ten top potters in the United States today. “East Meets West” will be on display through April 7 at the College’s Rockville Campus Art Gallery. Organized by Art Professor Kevin Hluch, the exhibit brings together the varied viewpoints and technical and aesthetic approaches of distinguished ceramic artists working on the West and East Coasts of the United States. The Fraser Gallery announces the selection and opening of the IV Annual Bethesda International Photography Competition, juried this year by Catriona Fraser through April 11. Ms. Fraser selected photographers and work from nearly 1,000 entries submitted worldwide. The exhibition opens on Friday, March 10, with an opening reception from 6-9 p.m. for all selected photographers as part of the Bethesda Art Walk. The Fraser Gallery is located at 7700 Wisconsin Avenue (Suite E) in Bethesda. The opening is free and open to the public.
The Maryland Humanities Council will host “Portraits of Life: Holocaust Survivors of Montgomery County,” Montgomery College’s photography exhibit exploring the human experience of survival and hope, at the Council’s new headquarters at 108 West Centre Street in the Mount Vernon Cultural district from now through April 13.
The exhibit, supported by the Council’s Dr. Hiltgunt Margret Zassenhaus Memorial Fund and on loan from the Paul Peck Humanities Institute at Montgomery College, combines survivors’ stories with black and white portrait panels. “Portraits of Life” will be open to the public on Thursday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. through April 13. In addition, special group tours of the exhibit, led by local Holocaust survivors, can be arranged by contacting Council Program Officer Jean Wortman at 410-685-4187. Venetian Masquerade, photographs by Maurice Asseo is on exhibit at Creative Partners Gallery from March 7 through April 8. These are a selection of photographs taken by Asseo in 2002 of Mardi Gras celebrants in Venice. The artist will host a reception with refreshments on Friday, March 10 from 6-9 p.m. Asseo will also present his complete multi-media slide show at the Gallery on Wednesday, March 15, at 6:30 p.m.

The Posh Pooch's Art Fund-raiser to Benefit Noah's Wish, featuring animal artwork by Karen Derrico — voted one of the "best pet artists," by Washingtonian Magazine — will run for three months from March 6. The opening reception will be on March 9 from 5-7 p.m. Some 25 percent of the proceeds from art on exhibit, and commissioned pet paintings will benefit Noah's Wish — an organization dedicated to rescuing animals in disasters.
