Selden’s Landing to Get New Classrooms

The Loudoun County School Board voted to request funding to add four classroom at Selden’s Landing Elementary School, in Leesburg, at last Tuesday night’s meeting.

The four new classrooms will add roughly 96 students to the capacity.

School Board chairman Robert DuPree (Dulles) reported on Sept. 30, 2005, the school had 808 students. It is projected to be at 959 this fall.

"The school's current capacity is 777, but the school's basic design is for about 800," DuPree said. "Similar buildings have accommodated as many as 950 students in the past, but they’ve been very overcrowded."

When the Board of Supervisors approved the Lansdowne Village Greens rezoning application, the developer agreed to designate $800,000 of the capital facilities contribution proffer for the construction to nearby Selden's Landing Elementary School. The developer already provided $50,000 for engineering work on the four classrooms.

The project is estimated to cost $1,330,000.

The School Board will request the remaining $750,000 proffer funding designated for the four-classroom expansion. They will request the remaining $530,000 shortfall from additional proffer funds associated with the Lansdowne Village Greens project at Selden’s Landing Elementary School.

The funding would allow the project to begin in fall 2006 and would be completed by September 2007.

"I believe that the four-classroom addition will certainly help Selden’s Landing temporarily deal with increased enrollment," DuPree said. "But given the projected enrollment growth that will continue to occur in the current Selden’s attendance zone, these classrooms will only delay the tough decisions that will have to be made regarding which areas can fit into this school in the years ahead."
