$16.07 for 1607

Local restaurants offer specials to celebrate the coming of Godspeed.

As Alexandria pulls out all the stops to celebrate the coming of the Godspeed next week, area restaurants are planning their own celebration, lunches and dinners for $16.07.

The idea was the creation of Susan Gordon of 100 King St. and Wendy Albert of Tempo Restaurant on Duke St. in the West End.

“We modeled the idea after Washington,” said Albert. Each year for New Year’s, city restaurants offer food at the price of the year.

So Albert and Gordon decided to fashion the menu at 1607, the year that Jamestown was founded.

“I tried to get restaurants citywide,” Albert said, adding that she hoped about 45 restaurants would be signed up. Three are on the West End: Tempo at 4231 Duke St.; Mango Mike’s Cool Caribbean Cafe at 4580 Duke St. and Shooter McGee’s at 5239 Duke St.

At Tempo they will be offering a three-course menu including soup or salad, entree and dessert for $16.07.

While Tempo will serve its usual French and Italian style food Albert plans to incorporate some early American style food; “We’ll have lots of crab including softshell and probably do oysters.”

Wendy Albert and her husband Serge are chefs and co-owners of Tempo’s.

Susan Gordon, director of marketing for Lebanese Taverna, owner of 100 King, once worked in D.C. where there are several restaurant promotions.

“We are trying to unite the restaurants of Alexandria to come up with different promotions,” she said, to promote the diversity of restaurants.

At 100 King, which features small plates and a Mediterranean menu, Gordon said they will continue to feature Mediterranean food.

For $16.07, lunch time guests will have their choice of three small plates.

Additionally, Alexandria restaurant discount coupon books are available at the Northern Virginia destination exhibit at the Landing Party Festival in Founders Park along the waterfront.
