Madeleine “Maddie” Ward is a sophomore at Wakefield High School. During her tenure, she has done much for the Theatre Arts Department.
Maddie, who makes her own clothes and has been sewing since a young age, uses her talent to design and organize the costumes for the school plays. She has made clothes, altered them for the actors and helped them change costumes during the shows. She then organizes the clothes and gets them cleaned.
That is only some of what she has done for the plays like “The Wiz,” “On The Verge,” and ‘Mrs. Bob Cratchet’s Wild Christmas Binge.” In addition to making the costumes, Maddie finds people to do hair and make-up, and she organizes the rather large costume storage space. Maddie’s inspiration and talent comes from her great grandmothers, Bernice Combs, a daughter of a sew girl who sewed everything for her children, and Marion Hahn and her great grandfather Edward Hahn who was a tailor in a men’s clothing store.
Maddie is currently in the process of making the costumes for the Neil Simon comedy, “Rumors.” With a total of ten performers, this is one of the smaller cast shows she has worked on. She will also design and construct the costumes for Dreamgirls this Spring.
The work that Madeleine has done at Wakefield is extraordinary. The talent she has contributed to the plays makes them more fun to watch and helps them run smoother.
