What Is Temporary?

Portable storage containers may soon be allowed to remain on residential properties longer than the current 30-day limit. In its work session Monday night, the Town Council considered issuing permits for the storage units for up to six months.

Council members expressed concern that most construction projects necessitating extra storage take considerably longer than 30 days, but they wanted to ensure that the units do not become permanent fixtures in residents' yards.

Mayor Jane Seeman said she felt any new ordinance should apply only to residential properties and added that she might like to see some sort of permit required even for temporary storage used for 30 days or less. Longer-term use would require a building permit.

Council members agreed that the units should not be allowed on vacant lots, that they should probably be allowed only on driveways, that they should be restricted to a size not to exceed eight feet by eight feet by 16 feet, and that the six-month permits should be renewable once. Also, a permit would be valid only until the home construction project is completed.

Town Attorney Steve Briglia will create a proposed ordinance to be considered by the council at a later date.
