Military Notes

Air Force Capt. Scott G. Johnson is currently deployed overseas at a forward-operating location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Johnson is an F-16 fighter pilot normally assigned to the 4th Fighter Squadron, Hill Air Force Base, Ogden, Utah. He has served in the military for six years.

He is the son of Robert and Cindy Johnson of Hoover Lane, Alexandria. The captain received a bachelor's degree in 2000 from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Army Pvt. Kia J. Gatlin has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Gatlin is the niece of Lucille R. Washington of Wesmond Drive, Alexandria.

Roger I. Lopez, Army Specialist, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. The medal is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, who while serving in any capacity with the Army in a non-combat area, have distinguished themselves by meritorious service or achievement. The specialist is a special electronic device repairer assigned to the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, Hunter Army Airfield, Hinesville, Ga. He is the son of Miriam D. Lopez of W. Braddock Road.

The American Legion Post #24 of Old Town will host a community breakfast. All Veterans are invited to stop by and learn of the post’s programs. Corner of Royal and Cameron Streets. Col. David J. Clement of the Marine Corps Reserve has graduated from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pa. He is the son of Martha M. Clement of Domain Place. The college is the Army's senior educational institution.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Joey C. Lee has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Larry and Marian Lee of Patton Boulevard, Alexandria. Lee received a bachelor's degree in 2005 from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va.
