Volunteer tutors needed: Volunteers are needed for day and evening hours to work one-to-one with adult learners in public libraries or in classrooms. VLP is a joint community project sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools. Homeschool Instructional Theatre Society presents Medieval Madness, an evening of medieval-themed one-act plays. Medieval Madness includes: “The Pale Pink Dragon,” “The Great Pandemonium” and “The Ugly Duckling.” Homeschool Instructional Theatre Society (HITS!) is comprised of homeschooled theatre students from Burke, Fairfax, McLean, Reston, Manassas, Vienna, and Haymarket. There will be two public performances of these shows, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28 and Wednesday, Nov. 29 at the James Lee Community Center Theatre, 2855A Annandale Road, Falls Church.

The McLean Connection is preparing for the annual children’s issue. Submissions of writing and artwork from children through 12th grade are welcome. Material from children enrolled in public school, private schools and home-schools program is encouraged. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Dec. 1. All material should be sent to the attention of assistant editor Meghan Williams, and labeled with the child’s name, grade, school and home zip code.

Electronic submissions are preferred, and should be e-mailed to mclean@connectionnewspapers.com or copied to compact discs and mailed to the McLean Connection at 7913 Westpark Drive, McLean, VA 22102. Hard copies of material will also be accepted at that address, and can be returned. Call Meghan Williams at 703-917-6449 with any questions.

Sixteen students at Oakcrest School in McLean have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.

Sixteen students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. These students are Elizabeth Campbell, Elizabeth Dausch, Michelle DuQuette, Mary Harper, Maria Jeffrey, Evelyn Little, Katrina Peller, Lucinda Samp, Molly Shotwell, Emily Swedo, Helen Syski, Stephanie Nguyen, Julia Schaumburg, Margaret Hadley and Jacqueline Livaudais.

Margaret Hadley and Jacqueline Livaudais qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Stephanie Nguyen and Julia Schaumburg qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
