<sh>Klos Fit to Stand Trial
<bt>Psychiatric treatment at Central State Hospital has restored Brendan Klos to competency to stand trial, according to Fairfax County Circuit Court records and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Katherine E. Stott.
Klos, 22 of Mount Vernon, is charged with the murder of Anthony Sherbaf, 20 of McLean. Klos and Sherbaf were friends and former high school classmates at Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School in Arlington, where they graduated in 2003.
Klos was hospitalized for psychiatric treatment shortly after his preliminary hearing in Fairfax County General District Court in January.
Fairfax County police responded at 8:06 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2005 to a report of a shooting at Klos’ address in the 6100 block of Beech Tree Drive in Mount Vernon. Seven units responded.
Police found Klos sitting on the curb in front of his house. According to testimony from officers at his preliminary hearing, Klos said, “I’m a murderer. I didn’t mean to, he was on top of me, he was strangling me, it hurt, I wanted him off, I couldn’t breathe.”
Inside the house, police found a silver handgun on the floor of a bedroom. Sherbaf, fatally wounded, was shot in the head and was lying next to the bed. Klos will remain at Central State Hospital until the time of his trial, according to Stott. His trial is tentatively scheduled for January 2007.

<bt>The annual Virginia Indian Festival will be held Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Riverbend Park in Great Falls. <sh>Senior Olympic Games Commence
<bt>Seniors will be competing in backgammon, softball, line dancing, bowling and basketball in the second day of competition in the 2006 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, Mon., Sept. 18. <sh>School Enforcement Campaign Begins
<bt>The Fairfax County Police Department, in the interest of promoting a safe school year, will launch its “Start of School” enforcement campaign. Additional officers will enforce all traffic laws including speeding in school zones, passing stopped school buses and failing to yield to pedestrians. Officers may ride on school buses to identify and summons motorists who break the law. They will be driving both marked and unmarked police cruisers and alternative vehicles. The purpose of the campaign, which will run through the end of September, is to educate the public about the increased danger of irresponsible driving during the school year. All violators will be ticketed as police continue to promote the safety and welfare of both children and adults.
<sh>Spring Hill Aquatics Refreshes Murals
<bt>Spring Hill RECenter's aquatics area reopened Sept. 5 after routine maintenance. Improvements include repainting the pool bottom and creating a new wall mural.
The underwater mural, which was created two years ago by artists at Britten-Grant Event Design has been retouched and expanded using more durable and longer lasting paints.
A wall mural will also be added in the Jacuzzi area.
