At its Tuesday, Sept. 12 public hearing, the Board of Supervisors voted to approve proffer funding for an addition to Seldens Landing Elementary School.
The budget adjustment appropriated $1,381,092.23, which was designated for schools in the Broad Run election district, to construct a four-room addition to the Lansdowne school. The addition will increase the school's current capacity of 777 students by 92 students and will help alleviate overcrowding in the school's attendance area.
The allocation causes no reduction in the county's public school budget for fiscal year 2007.
Supervisors also voted to take action on a proposed Fire and Emergency Medical Services tax district, forwarding the item to the Nov. 7 business meeting for a vote.
The tax district would separate the Fire and Rescue department from the rest of the county's budget during the board's yearly budget discussion, but would not create any increased burden on the taxpayers.
"This is not a new tax," Supervisor Jim Clem (R-Leesburg) said. "It is a separating out of your tax numbers, that money that would be designated to your combined system."
Clem added that creating the tax district will give more support to the county's current combined fire and rescue system that relies on both career and volunteer fire and rescue personnel.
"It shows a great commitment from this board that we are committed to that system," he said.
The board also voted to forward the proposed Erickson Retirement Communities to the Sept. 25 land-use committee for further discussion. If approved, the application would rezone 124.3 acres to develop a continuing-care retirement community consisting of 1,792 independent residential units and 316 assisted living and skilled nursing units. The land would be developed at a density of 24.3 dwelling units per acre with 260,000 square feet of retail and community service uses.
While several speakers spoke in favor of the proposal, Supervisors felt there were several land-use issues that needed to be addressed.
