September is Literacy Month

County Executive Douglas Duncan signed a proclamation on Friday, Sept. 8 marking September as Literacy Month in Montgomery County.

The aim of the proclamation is to increase awareness of the economic and societal importance of literacy as the county moves toward an increasingly technological future. The proclamation recognizes the efforts of the Literacy Council of Montgomery County in providing services to 747 adults during the 2005-2006 program year, including 154 who received Basic Literacy tutoring and 593 who received English as a Second Language tutoring.

In 1965, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated September 8 as International Literacy Day.
