Centreville Joins Civil War Trails System

An historical marker was unveiled Saturday at the Old Stone Church (Church of the Ascension) in Centreville's Historic District signifying Centreville joining the Virginia Civil War Trails System.

It means that Centreville will be placed on 1.8 million tourist maps as part of the Virginia Tourist System.

The ceremony took place on during Centreville Day with Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey and Board Chairman Gerry Connolly cutting the ribbon during the dedication.

"One of the most sacred things you can do is the stewardship of our history," said Connolly.

Added Frey: "This is just the start. Already we're starting to see [historic preservation] changes in the area."

The marker depicts the use of the Old Stone Church on Braddock Road as a Civil War hospital and highlights the contribution of Sara Emma Edmonds, a nurse at the hospital. She also posed as a man named Frank Thompson and served as a soldier in the infantry.
