Members of the Herndon High School Band will hold a carwash on Saturday, Aug. 18, to raise money to buy new concert uniforms. The students will work from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Elden Street Sunoco which is located at 640 Elden St., Herndon.

The Sunrise Valley Elementary School PTA needs many volunteers to stuff flyers into back-to-school folders, beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. Students are welcome to help, and remember that middle and high school students can earn volunteer hours. Plus, there will be snacks. The first Hughes Middle School PTA Hospitality Committee event of the school year will be the “Welcome Back to School Breakfast” on Monday, Aug. 27 at 8 a.m. The PTA will be catering a Continental Breakfast for all the Hughes teachers and staff. The committee will need donations and volunteers. Those who can help should contact either Clair Cyncynates, Hospitality Chair, at cyncynates@mac.com or Sara McAlpine, Hospitality Co-Chair at mcalpine@comcast.net. Donations needed are: coffee, cream, sugar; fruit juice; bagels and cream cheese; bread; fruit; cheese (cubed or sliced); danishes; butter, jam; table covers – paper; coffee cups; paper plates; plastic ware (knives and forks). Volunteers are needed 7-8 a.m. to set up; 8-9 a.m. to serve; and 9-9:45 a.m. to clean up.

David McFarland Stemler of Reston, a junior English/creative writing major, was named to the dean’s list at Franklin & Marshall College.
