Cedar Lane Elementary has a new principal. James Dallas comes to Ashburn from Alexandria. Dallas takes a community approach to education.
"I am a very visible person within the school and community. I want parents to know I will do whatever it takes to help their kids succeed socially and academically," he said.
Parents will be mailed more information including their child’s class assignment in mid-August. Back-to-school night for parents is scheduled for Aug. 30. Morning kindergarten, first- and second- grade sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. The session for afternoon kindergarten, third, fourth and fifth grade begins at 7:45 p.m.
Open house for students is Aug. 31, from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Cedar Lane PTA president Deborah Schwind said the school will participate for the first time this year in the National PTA Reflections program. The PTA will again this year sponsor a scholarship that is awarded to a Cedar Lane graduate for college tuition.

Principal Susan Mabee said the new year will bring many opportunities to Dominion Trail students. "We'll be starting our first full year with the new administration," said Mabee, who took over as principal in the middle of the last school year.
Kindergarten information night for parents will be Aug. 30. Parents of morning kindergarten students will meet at 6 p.m. and the afternoon parents will meet at 7 p.m.
Students and parents are invited to the school's open house Aug. 31, from 10-11 a.m. Class assignments will be mailed to students at the end of August.
The PTA has a busy year planned with something for everyone. "We will be doing our Sally Foster Gift Wrap Fund-raiser. We are also putting together a schoolwide cookbook designed and written by our students. We are going to offer a whole new line of spirit wear this year so that all students can be decked out in our school colors," said PTA president Kay Rook.
