Shooting in Fair Oaks
Fairfax County police say an officer shot a 27-year-old Fair Oaks man, early last Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, after he allegedly pulled a gun while detectives from the Organized Crime and Narcotics Division were serving a search warrant at his home. They were in the 12100 block of Monument Drive, and police say the warrant involved a narcotics investigation.
According to police, as detectives entered, the man produced a gun and one officer shot him in the upper body. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured.
The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, so police are not yet identifying the man. The officer was placed on routine, administrative leave pending an internal and parallel criminal investigation.
Route 28 Speeders Nabbed
In response to community concerns about traffic and road safety, police officers assigned to the Sully District Station conducted a traffic-safety campaign during November. The goal was to increase public awareness of traffic safety and reduce motor vehicle crashes.
Officers were deployed along the Route 28 corridor, and their enforcement efforts yielded results. Police charged two people with DWI and issued 613 traffic summonses and warnings.
They were for: Speeding, 370; failure to obey a highway sign, 117; red-light violation, 29; driving without or on a suspended license, 36; reckless driving, 32; improper passing on the shoulder, 15; and not wearing a seatbelt, 14.

Free Carseat Inspections
Certified technicians from the Sully District Police Station will perform free, child safety carseat inspections, Thursday, Dec. 13, and Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 5-8:30 p.m. each day, at the station, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd. in Chantilly. They’ll make sure the carseat is correct for the child’s age, height and weight, the child is securely placed in the seat, and the seat is properly installed in the vehicle.
No appointment is necessary. But residents should install the child safety seats themselves, so the technicians may properly inspect and make adjustments, as necessary. Note: Virginia's child-passenger law requires all children under 8 be properly restrained in a child safety seat or booster seat. But those 8 or older should keep using booster seats if they're shorter than 4 feet 9 inches.
WFCCA Land-Use Meeting
The West Fairfax County Citizens Association (WFCCA) Land-Use Committee will meet Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Sully District Governmental Center, 4900 Stonecroft Blvd. in Chantilly. Agenda items are as follows:
* The Marketplace at Centre Ridge: Representatives will present ideas for a coordinated, signage plan for this shopping center. They want a larger sign at Route 28 and New Braddock Road in Centreville, plus other changes.
* New Mount Zoar Baptist Church: This 200-member church is currently on Braddock Road in Fairfax. However, it's selling its land there and hopes to build a new place of worship on nearly six acres it purchased on Ordway Road in Centreville.
* Poplar Tree LLC: (Tentative). This applicant is seeking a special permit for a subdivision sales office. It's constructing a residential development along Autumn Glory Way in Chantilly.
School Boundary Mtg. Dec. 19
The last of the three school-boundary meetings involving parents in the attendance areas for Westfield and Chantilly high schools is slated for Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at Oakton High, 2900 Sutton Road in Vienna.
Blood Donations are Sought
The Inova Blood Donor Center in the Centremed I Building on Route 29 in Centreville (across from the Centreville Multiplex Cinemas) is in urgent need of blood donations — especially O positive or negative, as well as A and B. They're accepted Tuesday-Friday, noon-8 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. For an appointment to give blood, call 703-322-1970, or drop in at your own convenience.
Role Models for Children
Volunteers are needed throughout Northern Virginia to be positive role models for children who currently have an incarcerated parent. Mentors meet with children two hours per week. Weekly meetings are supplemented by monthly group recreational activities. The only qualification required is a desire to help a child in need.

The Fairfax Area Agency on Aging "Meals on Wheels" program is in immediate need of drivers to deliver meals, Monday through Friday, to senior adults living in Fairfax County. Volunteers who speak Vietnamese are also needed.
The job involves picking up meals at specified sites between 10:30 a.m.-noon and delivering them to seniors by 1 p.m. Drivers may choose to deliver meals on a daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly or substitute basis.
