Sputnik and the Space Age (HIS 298-030L) will be offered Mondays, 6:30-10 p.m. beginning Feb. 12. This three-credit class, taught by Dr. Harry Butowsky, a historian with the U.S. National Park Service, will explore and share his passion about space exploration. With a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Butowsky is the author of six National Historic Landmark Theme Studies, including Men in Space, as well as more than 60 articles concerning the American space program, constitutional, military, social and labor history.

Dr. Anastase Shyaka, an instructor from the University of Rwanda (Kigali) and a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence with both Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University, will teach a class in Contemporary Politics-Africa (PLS 295-030L) starting Feb. 14 and running for 12 weeks. Based largely on case studies, this course will examine current political and social issues in sub-Saharan Africa. The class will meet 2-5 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Also starting Feb. 14 is a new course titled Peace and Stability Operations (PLS 293-030L), taught by Professor James Hanlon, a White House foreign policy analyst. A NOVA graduate with a rich career in management, international politics and consulting, Hanlon will share his considerable experience in international security, intelligence analysis and civil society peace operations with current NOVA students. This is a first-hand look at peace and stability operations in today’s complicated political arena. The class meets Wednesdays, 6:30-10 p.m.
