The White House Comes to Herndon

First and second grade students at Herndon Elementary School recently had visitors from the White House Historical Society.

As students explored White House family life, the first grade students learned what it is like to be a First Kid and live in the White House.

Acting as “real” first kids, students role-played different historical characters as they re-enacted White House events such as birthday parties and holiday celebrations. The program introduced the children to White House families throughout history. At the conclusion of the program, the class made their own “White House Family Album” to include historical photos and new images they created in class during their re-enactment.

The second grade students learned about what is involved in being President of the United States.

Through this Constitution-based workshop, students explored and acted out the various roles of the president, such as Commander in Chief and Leader of Our Nation, as they pretended to be the president, members of the Cabinet and other public officials. This program emphasized making important decisions while recreating significant historical and current events.
