Site Sponsors Dulles South Contest

It is difficult to debate the idea that the Dulles South area is one of the fastest growing portions of Loudoun. But while homes and businesses continue to be built and people continue to move in, the area is a hodgepodge of planned communities, towns and villages, county and business properties.

To help the area and its residents find their own identity, Dulles South Online is sponsoring a contest to find a logo for the region. Ted and Kelly McLaughlan, creators of the site, are looking for the best depiction of the area, in a clear, easy-to-read logo that would be promoted among local businesses and government entities. In the logo, they hope to highlight the region’s natural beauty, history and diverse community.

"The point of this is to generate a grassroots-driven identity for the area as it grows so quickly and ultimately becomes a destination, like Tysons Corner," Ted McLaughlan said in e-mail. "I believe residents and small businesses should have the opportunity to create and promote an iconic symbol of the area."

The contest, which is open to anyone from children to business owners, is being held through July 15. Entries can be submitted through the Dulles South Online Web site. While there is no monetary prize, McLaughlan said the winning entry would be used publicly in the future.

"Our plans are, once a logo is selected, to further develop and promote it," he said. "This effort could well result in a strengthening of the ties and cooperation between the three counties intersecting in this area, in promoting the area and the businesses within."
