Kate Robertson Is Published in Highlights

Greenbriar West student, Kate Robertson, 9, of Fairfax, recently had her poem published in the children's magazine, Highlights.

The daughter of Guy and Yuko Robertson of North Lake Court is an avid reader of the magazine and decided to submit her poem — her first piece to be published.

"I was pretty happy," she said about getting published, "because not everyone gets their story published in a magazine."

Kate's poem titled "The Dreamblower" is about a creature who tries to make sure kids have good dreams before the Nightmare Blower can reach them. In order to make sure kids have good dreams, he has "nets to catch dreams, pouches to carry them, strong teeth to crack them ... and a nose with a hole in it so he can blow the dreams."

Kate got her inspiration from the book, The BFG by Roald Dahl, which gave her plenty of ideas.

She added: "I don't have a favorite book but I love the series Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling — she's one of my favorite authors."

Kate enjoys being in the fourth grade because "My teacher is really nice and he's kind of easy. I like being in fourth grade because there is not a lot of homework," she said.

In her spare time, Kate enjoys playing the piano, reading, playing with her Nintendo, and arts and crafts.

When she's not busy with her activities, she likes to play with her cat, Nora and hamster, Nunu.

For the future, she says: "I really want to be an author because I like to read and write, and an actress because I like to act."
