The public is invited to attend a community meeting to discuss athletic fields and other site features proposed for the Witter property. The meeting will take place on Thursday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in the Bishop Ireton High School’s cafeteria, located at 201 Cambridge Road. The City of Alexandria reminds property owners that payment of the first half of the 2007 Real Estate Tax and Refuse Fee is due Friday, June 15. To avoid late payment penalty and interest charges, payment must be received by the City or postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service no later than June 15. Property owners whose real estate taxes are not paid by their mortgage company and who have not received a tax bill in the mail should call the City’s Treasury Division at 703-838-4777 to request a duplicate bill. Tax bills can be paid in person at the Treasury Division, City Hall, 301 King Street, Room 1510. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 9. <bt>Alexandria City Public Schools, Food and Nutrition Services, will sponsor the USDA Summer Food Service Program at all of summer School sites. Free breakfasts will be provided to all enrolled elementary summer school students weekdays from June 25 through July 20. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all enrolled secondary and high school summer school students on weekdays June 25 through July 27. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all enrolled Kindergarten Prep students weekdays Aug. 8 through 19.

Free breakfasts will be served to any child under age 18 in the community at the following elementary sites from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday through Friday: James K. Polk, John Adams, Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics, Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology and William Ramsay. Free breakfasts will be offered to any child in the community at Minnie Howard School and George Washington Middle School between 9:40 and 10 a.m.; lunches will be offered from 12:35 to 12:50 p.m. daily. Signs will be posted at the main entrance at each school and each entrance where meals will be served. Meals must be consumed in designated spaces posted at each site.

Meals will be provided to all children without charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service

The public is invited to attend a community meeting to discuss the park planning process for the recently acquired parcel at 48 South Early Street. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19 in the meeting room at the City's Burke Library, located at 4701 Seminary Road.

City staff will present the park planning process that will be used to master plan the parcel and will discuss the public input process which will include the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission.

The Alexandria community is invited to attend the 3rd annual Wine-and-Cheese Silent Auction event, hosted by Women Mean Business to benefit Alexandria’s Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. The event will be held on Thursday, June 21, at the Campagna Center, located at 418 South Washington Street, from 5:30 to 8: p.m. Guests will enjoy free refreshments from businesses such as Stone Mountain Vineyards, Cheestique, and Trattoria Da Franco. Musical entertainment will be provided by Michael Yugo, a local musician who plays acoustic rock.

The highlight of the event is a fabulous silent auction that features many wonderful items, including donated goods from Oriental Carpets and original art, tickets to professional sporting events, a day of sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, and weekend lodging and a winery tour at Stone Mountain Vineyards.

Tickets are available to the public for $25 per person in advance or $30 at the door. Only cash or checks are accepted for payment. The City of Alexandria has been chosen to receive $17,281 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the City. Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: 1) be private voluntary non-profits or units of government, 2) have an accounting system, 3) practice nondiscrimination, 4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and 5) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. The deadline for applications to be received is June 21.

The City of Alexandria's Office of Aging and Adult Services has published "Cooking with Friends," a collection of the best recipes of the Department of Human Services' staff. The cost of the cookbook is $10. Proceeds from the book will benefit the Eleanor Ager Host Fund. The cookbook can be purchased at the main office for the Department of Human Services, located at 2525 Mt. The Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse is in need of volunteers to serve in the following positions:

* Guardians for adults with mental retardation and mental illness. Guardians make decisions about personal care, health care, living conditions and recreation. Guardians are court-appointed and bonded. The duties require approximately four hours per month.

* Representative Payees to receive Social Security checks and pay bills for persons with mental retardation or mental illness. A separate bank account is opened with automatic deposit and there are few monthly transactions. The duties require two hours per month, per account.

* Friendly Visitors to plan one-on-one outings and activities with a resident of an Alexandria group home for adults with mental retardation. This volunteer activity requires approximately two hours per week.

* Mentors to meet one-on-one with a specific child on a weekly basis to provide friendship, act as a positive role model, plan leisure and recreational activities together, participate in age appropriate activities and assist the child with school work as needed. Meetings with the child take place primarily in neutral locations away from the child's and mentor's homes. Being a mentor requires approximately two hours per week.
