After five years as assistant and then associate rabbi, Har Shalom Associate Rabbi Michelle Fisher was bid a fond farewell on Sunday, June 10, as she prepares to leave for her own pulpit in California.

Rabbi Fisher, named rabbi at Congregation B’nai Shalom in Walnut Creek, Calif., will leave Har Shalom on June 21, and is planning a car trip filled with sight-seeing in Montana, Wyoming and Oregon before she arrives in northern California in early July. The congregation’s new assistant rabbi, Rabbi Risa Weinstein, is expected to arrive at Har Shalom in mid-July. She is a recent graduate of the University of Judaism and was ordained as a rabbi in May 2007.

Approximately 300 teens from throughout the Washington area were honored on Sunday, June 10 for their outstanding leadership, participation and commitment to the Jewish community at the 8th Annual Teen Recognition Event. The event, which was held at Congregation B’nai Tzedek in Potomac, is sponsored by the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning. Recognized for outstanding teen leadership and participation, award recipients are personally selected by rabbis, youth directors, advisors, and other Jewish professionals within our community. These exceptional young leaders are chosen for community service participation, demonstrated initiative, leadership skills, and commitment to the Greater Washington area Jewish community.

The Jewish Foundation for Group Homes (JFGH) installed Lawrence S. Herman as its thirteenth Board President at its twenty-fourth Annual Meeting. Along with Herman, four Vice Presidents were also installed to share leadership of the agency's Board of Directors. These Vice Presidents are: David B. Raskin, Vice President for Programs; Dennis Speisman, Vice President for Administration; Abba J. Blum, Vice President for Finance; and Kenneth R. Gilman, Vice President for Development.

"Prayer Book Hebrew," Tuesdays from 6:45-7:45 p.m. at Congregation Har Shalom, 11510 Falls Road, Potomac. Call 301-299-7087, ext. 2315. This is a continuing course for those who have completed a basic Hebrew siddur series of classes using Level I of "Alef Isn't Enough." This course is designed to open the door to understanding the Hebrew of prayers. The fee is $30 in addition to registration fee.
