The Loudoun Arts Council’s annual ArtShare program awarded grant monies to seven area arts organizations. Recipients of this year’s awards are Loudoun Academy of the Arts, Loudoun Symphony, Master Singers of Virginia, Sterling Playmakers, Loudoun Ballet, Loudoun Community Band and the Loudoun Chorale. The total granted was $10,380.
The Loudoun County Animal Shelter hosted representatives from 34 humane organizations Sunday, March 4, as part of Petfinder.com's national adoption options workshop series.
Eighty-eight participants from Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Pennsylvania attended the day long program at Ashburn Library. They represented a variety of animal welfare organizations, from municipal and private animal shelters to rescue and education groups.
Army National Guard Pvt. Sherrell D. Bradshaw has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
She is the daughter of Ronald Bradshaw of Balfour Place, Fayetteville, N.C., and Karen Carlisle of Stanford Square, Sterling. Bradshaw is a 2006 graduate of Pine Forest High School, Fayetteville.

On March 20, Del. Tom Rust (R-86) received the bipartisan endorsement of Del. Vince Callahan (R-McLean) and Sen. Chuck Colgan (D-Prince William) to take the position left vacant by the late Del. Harry Parrish of Manassas on the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB). Callahan and Colgan are the co-chairman of the Virginia General Assembly’s Northern Virginia delegation.
Loudoun County Animal Care & Control announces that its Animal Control Division has been selected to receive the 2006 Outstanding Agency Award from the National Animal Control Association (NACA).
Northern Virginia Community College, Loudoun campus student Carlos X. Munoz Burgos was one of three Virginia students named to the 17th annual All-USA Community College First Team and will receive a $2,500 cash award. Burgos, 22, from Quito, Ecuador, is an international political economy major with a 4.0 grade point average. He serves as president of his campus PTK chapter. He is a founding member and leader of the Student Advisory Council and Globe One, an organization formed to address global topics of high importance. His other volunteer activities include work at the women’s shelter and public schools in Loudoun County and coaching for the Sterling Youth Soccer Association.
The Boy Scouts of America National Court of Honor has awarded Michael Hennesy a Medal of Merit for his prompt action in rescuing a fellow surfer caught in a riptide. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Hennesy, he is a member of Venturing Crew 761.
Shenandoah University’s Board of Trustees voted to elect Dr. Tracy Fitzsimmons, senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs, to succeed James A. Davis as the 16th president of Shenandoah University, effective July 1, 2008. Fitzsimmons will become the first woman president of the 132-year-old institution and the fourth president to serve at the Winchester campus since the institution moved from Dayton, Va., in 1960.
Pinar Smith of Park View High School was awarded a $1,000 scholarship through Comcast's Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program.
Karen Krei, chair of the Student Recognition Committee of the Loudoun Volunteer Services Board of Directors, presented Andrew Livingstone, a junior at Dominion High School (DHS), with a Certificate of Appreciation, honoring him as Student Volunteer of the Month on April 25. The small ceremony took place in the Athletic Department of Dominion High School.

A benefit for Loudoun Interfaith Relief, held at Lightfoot Restaurant April 24, raised $15,000 to support feeding the families served by the nonprofit. So far this fiscal year, LIR has prepared and distributed 261,000 meals to more than 29,707 individuals.
The Loudoun Commission on Women recognized 10 Outstanding Women of Loudoun County, May 15.
