Adoption Extravaganza

Dozens of rescued kittens and their mothers will be available for adoption on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Reston’s Regional Library, located at 11925 Bowman Towne Drive in Reston. The event is sponsored by Commonwealth Cats of Oakton, Dewey Animals of Centerville, HAVEN Rescue of Great Falls, Homestretch of Reston and the SPCA of Northern Virginia, and will be held in the library’s large meeting room from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The adoption will feature cats and kittens of all ages.

“We will have virtually every type of cat and kitten that anyone would want,” said June Faris of HAVEN Rescue in Great Falls. “Long haired, semi-long haired and domestic short-hairs in a variety of colors — black, orange, gray and white, tabbies, patch-cats and tuxedoes. All of the cats and kittens have been vaccinated against distemper and all have been de-wormed. Cats and older kittens will be vaccinated for rabies as well.”

Faris said she is hoping for an enthusiastic turnout similar to the ones that occurred in the nineties, when HAVEN put on several events in conjunction with Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

“That was fantastic,” said Faris. “We had a 95 percent adoption rate —way above the 20 percent adoption rate in our nation’s shelters. This was all due to the wonderful response of the residents of Reston, Herndon, Great Falls and the surrounding communities.”

All of the kittens and cats can be selected at the adoption site and some will be able to go home that day. Others will be delivered to the adoptive families following a home and reference check.

“We are asking all adopters who are renting to please bring a copy of their lease agreement – showing that they are permitted to adopt – with them,” said Faris. “This event is really important to us because we have lots of cats and kittens that we need to get adopted.”
