Nicholas R. Nelson graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.
Although continued military training and leadership development is included in the 33-day curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet's intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve.
The cadet is a student at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg.
He is the son of Walfred A. and Melanie M. Nelson of Smokehouse Court, Ashburn. Nelson is a 2004 graduate of Stone Bridge High School, Ashburn.
George W. Lemm of Aldie has been elected as an alternate delegate to the 124th Annual American Angus Association Convention of Delegates, November 12 in Louisville, Ky.
Lemm, a member of the American Angus Association, is one of 381 Angus breeders who have been elected by fellow members to serve as an alternate state representative to the annual meeting. Representing 46 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, the state delegates will participate in the business meeting and elect new officers and five directors to the American Angus Association board.
Mark Duffell of Aldie has been elected as a delegate to the 124th Annual American Angus Association Convention of Delegates, Nov. 12 in Louisville, Ky.

Scott A. Meyers, a fourth-grade teacher at Rolling Ridge Elementary School, has been nominated for the fifth time for inclusion in the annual Who's Who Among America's Teachers for 2007. Less than 1 percent of all nominated teachers are published three or more times. Meyers was also included in the 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005-06 editions. All of the 114,000 teachers included in the book were nominated by former students, who themselves are currently listed one of three Who's Who students editions.
Dr. Jennifer G. Barrett has joined Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center as an assistant professor of equine surgery. In this tenure track appointment, Barrett will be utilizing the center's newly constructed molecular research lab and directing investigations into tendon and ligament healing and repair. She will also serve as a practicing surgeon at the hospital and as an instructor for the center's veterinary and graduate students.
The Loudoun Sheriff’s Office participated in several events in recent weeks to help raise proceeds for charitable organizations. Among them was the 6th Annual Rock-N-Ride to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network and the 15th Annual Day Plane Pull to benefit Special Olympics. In August a onetime Sheriff’s Office cruiser saw its last two nights of action at the Prince William and Clarke County Fair demolition derbies.

The six-week, two-phased orientation program must be successfully completed by the cadets prior to entering their freshman year. The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets.

The 3rd Annual Homeless Walk for Shelter through historic Leesburg, took place Saturday, Sept. 22. Sponsored by the Good Shepherd Alliance (GSA) and Fannie Mae Foundation, the "Walk to Shelter Homeless" drew 120 people including 31 children, who raised funds for homeless programs and to foster volunteerism in service to homeless people. Previous walks drew 61 and 35 registered walkers in 2005 and 2006.
Jungok Park of Ashburn received at gold medal for singles men's tennis at the tennis competition in the 2007 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics, which was held at Wakefield Park, Annandale Sept. 18-20.
Eric Adolphe, a local business leader, has been selected as a winner of the 2007 Tibbetts Awards. Adolphe is best known for his work in technological innovation through Optimus Corporation. He founded Optimus in 1992 and grew it to an $85 million business, which was acquired by Aviel Systems in 2005.
Nicholas A. Lombarde has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader's Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky.
The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets that can lead to the ultimate goal of becoming an Army officer. College students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation to serve in the Army or ROTC, and are eligible to receive two-year college scholarship offers and attend the Advanced ROTC Course at their college.
The cadet is a student at Wentworth Military Academy, Lexington, Mo.
Lombarde is the son of Angelo L. Lombarde of Lima, Ohio, and Keron S. Shaffer of Glade St., Potomac Falls.
He is a 2007 graduate of Potomac Falls High School.
Don M. Middleton retired from the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative’s board of directors in September after serving as co-op director for 30 years. He represented the Loudoun County region. Middleton was elected to the Tri-County Electric Cooperative Board of Directors in 1977. He was instrumental in helping Tri-County merge with Prince William Electric Cooperative to form NOVEC in 1983.
