Students in the Chantilly Academy Cosmetology classes traveled to Richmond on Oct. 1 to demonstrate their skills at the annual Virginia State Fair Skills USA competition. The state fair draws hundreds of students from across the state to a competition sponsored by Skills USA, where students gain experience, confidence and leadership skills.
The cosmetology students could choose to compete in three different categories: manikin updo, manikin fantasy or team fashion. Second-year students in Mr. White’s Chantilly Academy Cosmetology class, Talita Conceicao from South Lakes High and Asianna Vanno from Centreville High took first place in the state for the team fashion competition category. In this category, the students were required to style the hair and apply makeup to a live model (Raquel Paiz from South Lakes High) for a formal event. Mrs. Climo’s first year student, Latea Fortune from Chantilly High, performed well in her first-ever cosmetology competition. She took first place in her heat in the Manikin Fantasy Updo category, which focuses on originality and creativity when styling hair.
Cosmetology instructors, Mr. White and Mrs. Climo commented that competing in the state fair enabled their students to see what their peers are doing and learning in cosmetology across the Commonwealth and gain experience in a large competition early in the school year. Both teachers are extremely proud of all of the students and how well they performed in their first competition of the year.
