Discovering Buddhism: What is "mind," and how does it affect the experiences of happiness and suffering? Explore the differentiation between mind and brain, and learn methods to transform destructive thoughts and attitudes and create a positive and joyous mind. Teaching and meditation. Saturday Sept. 8, 6-9 p.m., the All Dulles Area Muslim Society will hold the sixth annual Interfaith Peace Gathering at the ADAMS Center, 46903 Sugarland Road, Sterling, in remembrance of the victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. Interfaith groups will be represented and speaking at this event. ADAMS will also be honoring local police and fire departments for their continuous community service. The All Dulles Area Muslim Society community is co-sponsoring and participating in the Interfaith Unity Walk in Washington D.C., 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. Visit www.911unitywalk.org.

Church of the Epiphany, 3301 Hidden Meadow Drive, Herndon, will be hosting a community-wide praise and worship event on Sunday, Sept. 9. A free concert featuring singer and songwriter Dennis Jernigan will begin at 6 p.m. Prior to the concert, members of the community are welcome to enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn and snow cones, as well as inflatable games for children starting at 4 p.m. on the church lawn. Northern Virginia Ethical Society's leader, Jone Johnson Lewis, begins the society's program year Sunday, Sept. 9, with a look at the role of compassion and emotion in ethical thinking.
