Pruett To Be Speaker at Alexandria Sportsman's Club Meeting

Club will host monthly meeting on April 15.

The Alexandria Sportsman's Club will host its monthly meeting at the Old Dominion Boat Club on April 15, with current Virginia defensive coordinator Bob Pruett set to be the featured speaker.

Pruett started his coaching career as an assistant at both Falls Church and Hayfield High Schools, before receiving his first head coaching job at then-Groveton High School in Alexandria. There, Pruett was the head football coach from 1970-1972 before moving to Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, Va., where he was head football coach, assistant principal and head golf coach from 1973-78.

Pruett retired briefly before current Virginia head coach Al Groh lured him to replace Mike London, who left to become the head coach at Richmond in early January.

Pruett retired in 2005 after compiling a 94-23 record (.803) over nine seasons between 1996-2005. During his tenure, Thundering Herd had two undefeated seasons, including No. 10 ranking in 1999.

The Sportsman’s Club will host Mount Vernon alum and former NFL offensive lineman Ed Cunningham during its annual banquet on May 21.

The Sportsman’s Club, which dates back to 1948, has themed monthly meetings at the Old Dominion Boat Club. Social Hour begins at 7 p.m. followed by the regular meeting, which starts at 7:45 pm. Each meeting features a guest speaker, and an award presented to the high school and recreation department athlete of the month. The meetings are followed by a casual dinner.
