Guiding Eyes for the Blind needs puppy raisers who are willing to open their homes to Labrador Retriever puppies until they are old enough to be professionally trained as guide dogs, usually 16-18 months. Potomac Conservancy offers outdoor hands-on volunteer opportunities to improve water quality in the Potomac River watershed. Participate in Potomac Conservancy's signature project Growing Native by collecting tree seeds in the fall and planting trees along streams and the Potomac River in the spring. Volunteers can also help clean up trash, remove invasive plants or take part in large-scale tree planting activities. All volunteer opportunities are offered on a seasonal basis. Volunteers are the backbone of a successful Covenant Partner in the Fuller Center for Housing (TFCH. Need members to join the Volunteer Recruitment Committee. The committee needs to develop a recruitment plan that includes an inventory of duties that volunteers can perform, both in the office and in the field and a list of potential sources. Doorways for Women and Families provides a safe, weekly, confidential domestic violence support group. Volunteers are needed for The 14th Annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors Memorial Day Weekend. The Carlin, an independent living facility for seniors located near Ballston Common, has a variety of opportunities for volunteers. Specific needs include assistance with our newsletter, particularly art work; helping to organize a Walking Club for people with limited mobility; a line dance organizer; and someone with medical experience to do blood pressure checks. Processing and Routing Library Materials. Help unpack, discharge and sort books and other materials at the Central Library, 1015 North Quincy St., so that customers at all locations can enjoy them. Volunteers must be familiar with computers and able to use computers to charge and discharge library materials. Volunteer with immigrant children. Volunteers needed to work with immigrant children while their parents learn English. Responsibilities include helping with homework, reading, playing board games, chess, basketball, volleyball and/or cards with the children. Volunteers will work at Randolph Elementary School, 1306 S. Quincy St., Arlington. Volunteers typically work two hours a week and a three-month commitment for the duration of the class is preferred. Volunteers need to fill out an application and attend an orientation, given the second Wednesday of every month. Child-Care Leader/Child-Care Assistants. The Community Outreach Program is seeking people who are interested in providing structured activities for preschool and elementary children for daytime and evening activities.
