Quotable: “We have a tough schedule up front and I did that with the purpose of testing our guys early. Hopefully, that will make us ready for a tough district schedule.” – head coach Justin Fitzgerald

Outlook: After winning the first official Virginia state title in 2006, the Robinson Rams played last season with a target firmly affixed to their jerseys. With the knowledge that every other team in the region was gunning for them, the Rams didn’t even break a sweat, going undefeated against region opponents and winning their second consecutive state title.

This season, the Rams’ uniforms sport that same target, but with 18 players lost to graduation last year, the players in those jerseys aren’t the same.

Same target, different Rams.

“We touched on it briefly,” said head coach Justin Fitzgerald. “I don’t view it as something new for these kids. Even though we graduated 18 kids, the majority of the kids that we do return were brought up and were part of the roster last year. They realize what it means to be in this program.”

The Rams’ major losses include Matt Kugler (51 goals, 56 assists), goalkeeper Ryan Kleman (.680 save percentage), David Laiti and Tyler Zinck.

“It is going to take some time to gel,” said Fitzgerald. “We lost key guys at key positions. It is going to take us a little bit of time.”

Seniors Jon Kilbourn and Daniel McNulty will captain this year’s young squad, with many young players getting their chance to fill out the Rams’ squad.

“They will handle it well,” said Fitzgerald. “But if they don’t, it will certainly be a challenging season for us.”
