All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Monday, May 26, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.
Recreation Centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 26. All other City recreation centers will be closed.
Libraries: The Beatley Central Library (5005 Duke St.) will be closed Sunday, May 25, for repairs. Beatley Central's normal hours are 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays; normal hours will resume on Sunday, June 1. The Barrett Branch Library (717 Queen St.) will be open May 25, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All Alexandria Library branches will be closed on Monday, May 26.
Transit: Alexandria Transit Company’s DASH bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on May 26.
Refuse Collection: Residential trash and recycling will not be collected on May 26. Scheduled collections will be delayed by one day during the week of May 26.
Parking: On May 26, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, as well as time restrictions in residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits.
State Offices: The following Commonwealth of Virginia offices located in Alexandria will be closed May 26: the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts, the Clerk of Court Office, and the DMV Office at 2681 Mill Road.
Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King St.), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center at 1200 N. Howard St., and the Adolescent Health Center at 3701 W. Braddock Road will be closed on May 26.
Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operated by the Alexandria Office on Women operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the domestic violence hotline, 703.838.4911, and the sexual assault hotline, 703.683.7273.

The Northern Virginia Review is accepting entries for the next issue, slated for publication in March 2009. The Review, an annual journal of essays, fine art, photography, poetry and short stories, accepts submissions from residents of the Northern Virginia and the greater Washington metropolitan area.
People may submit two essays, two works of fiction, three pieces of artwork and four poems, with a limit of five items per person. The deadline for entries is Sept. 18. The Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC) is now accepting nominations for the Bernard “Ben” Brenman Archaeology in Alexandria Award. The Brenman Award is open to businesses, organizations, families, professional preservationists, volunteers, students and other individuals who have demonstrated work or efforts in archaeological investigation, research, site protection, education, public interpretation, open space design, collections, or conservation. Community Partners for Children’s fourth annual baby supply drive is underway. The following Alexandria drop off locations will have donation baskets and containers at their businesses. The items collected during the drive will be donated to four local non-profit groups that help struggling families: Casey Clinic, Alexandria Neighborhood Services in Arlandria, Center for Alexandria’s Children and the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry (NOVAM). The other way to help is to donate a tax-deductible check to support Community Partners for Children’s Baby Supply Drive, Back-to-School Drive and the Holiday Toy Drive. The Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking persons who are diplomatic, assertive, and good communicators to serve as volunteer ombudsmen. Volunteers are assigned to a specific local nursing home or assisted-living facility in the City of Alexandria and make weekly visits, meeting one-on-one with residents.
