PVI Finishes Fourth at VISAA Tourney

A wet start didn’t hamper the sixteen-team field in the 2007 Virginia Independent School Athletic Association’s state golf tournament at Fauquier Springs Country Club. Midway through the front nine on May 20, the skies cleared, but the high school players still had to cope with soggy fairways and greens.

In the more competitive, eight-team Division I, Carlisle School, Martinsville, posted a four-player total of 301 to win by two strokes over Richmond’s St. Christopher’s. Paul VI finished fourth, while Alexandria’s St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes and Episcopal finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Chesapeake’s Greenbrier Christian Academy won the division II title. Individually, Paul VI’s Alex Kormanec finished seventh with a 75 and earned all-state honors.

“The team did well this year,” Paul VI coach Milt Papke said afterward. “We won twelve of our fifteen matches, losing only to three good teams, DeMatha, Georgetown Prep, and Gonzaga.”

Papke expects his three freshmen—Tyler Wingo, Jay Pinkos, and Brandon Luxenberg—to be even better next year.
