Saints Lose in VISAA Semifinal

After advancing to the boys lacrosse Interstate Athletic Conference title game with an upset of Georgetown Prep, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes failed to defend its VISAA Division I state championship.

SSSAS lost to Norfolk Academy, 9-8, in the semifinal game on when Andy Via scored with 2:31 left in overtime. The Bulldogs eventually lost to third-seeded St. Anne’s-Belfield in triple overtime during the Division I title game in Charlottesville, giving St. Anne’s-Belfield its first-ever state title.

SSSAS lost 5-1 to Landon in the IAC championship, giving the Bears their first league title since 2004. Ian Gordon’s goal cut the deficit to two, but the Saints mounted little offense against Landon senior goalie C.T. Fisher.

The Saints finished 8-12, including a seven-game winning streak after losing 10 of their first 11 games.

Senior long stick midfielder Briggs Davis, senior Jason Neithamer and junior midfielder Andrew Cordia made the first-team all-IAC team, as voted on by the league coaches.
