West Springfield Girls Soccer Upset in Regionals

The Spartans avenged an early season tie to South County in the Patriot District championship on Friday, upending the Stallions in overtime to capture the league crown.

But the celebration was short-lived as West Springfield faced off with Stone Bridge — a team it beat 3-2 to open the season — in the first round of the 16-team Northern Region tournament.

The Spartans lost, 2-1, to the Bulldogs at home on Tuesday in heart-breaking fashion. Stone Bridge forward Krysti Rodriguez netted the game-winner deep into the second half to finish West Springfield’s season and any possible hopes at a state title.

Spartan sophomore midfielder Tina Rader scored in the first half, tying the lead at 1-1.

The game came just four days after a four-overtime thriller against the Stallions, handing South County its only loss of the season en route to West Springfield’s second straight district title.

The Stallions downed McLean, 5-3, on Tuesday and will host Chantilly on Thursday.
