Mount Vernon looks for eight straight against Stone Bridge

No. 3 seed Mount Vernon at No. 2 seed Stone Bridge

The Skinny: There’s no denying the Mount Vernon football team is on quite a run having reeled off seven-straight wins, but its semifinal opponent, Stone Bridge, is one of the few teams in the area that can laugh at the Majors’ streak. The Bulldogs have not lost a game since September 7, 2007 — a span of 24 contests — and have beaten opponents by an average of more than 42 points per game this season. Stone Bridge features a defense chock full of Division-I prospects, including three defensive linemen that are committed to ACC schools. On offense, quarterback Patrick Thompson has already signed on to play for Wake Forest next season. However, Thompson sat out of the team’s 52-7 first-round win over Jefferson with an injury last week.

How Mount Vernon Can Win: Nobody is going to pick Mount Vernon in this one, but the Majors run first, run second, run all the time offense might be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to defeating Stone Bridge. If Mount Vernon can control time of possession and keep Stone Bridge’s dynamic offense off the field, it could have a shot at an upset that would register state-wide. Again, that’s easier said than done against a defense that allowed minus-89 rushing yards against Jefferson last week.
