The Virginia Run Turkey Trot will be held Thursday, Nov. 27 at 8 a.m. in Centreville. It includes a 5K running course as well as a 2K walking course. Each goes through the Virginia Run community at Route 29 and Pleasant Valley Road in Centreville.

All proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit Life with Cancer, INOVA Health System’s non-profit program for cancer patients and their families. The event has been raising funds for the cancer program for 16 years. During that time, Life with Cancer has become a well established support program, and in the past two years, the Turkey Trot has attracted enough participants and sponsors to donate $53,000 to the charity. This year's race will exceed $500,000 donated to with Life with Cancer. Last year over 2,300 runners and over 750 walkers participated.

Easy registration is available online at www.runwashington.com. Entry fee is $20 to run and $13 to walk. The fee includes a long sleeve T-shirt, post race snacks and raffle participation. Prizes are awarded to the fastest two males and females overall and in the Virginia Run residents’ category. In addition, the top two runners in the following age categories will receive prizes: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-18, 19-29, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-plus.

SYA Travel Baseball will be holding tryouts for its 8-U through 12-U travel baseball teams Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 6. All baseball players within the SYA boundaries are eligible to attend the tryouts. The CYA U11 Scorpions (boys) are looking for talented and dedicated players to join their squad for the spring season. The Scorpions currently play in NCSL Division 2. SYA Wrestling is holding on-line registration for the 2008-2009 Winter Season for youth ages 7-14. Practices are held at Centreville and Westfield High Schools beginning the second week in November and run through February. Weekly tournaments are held beginning in December. Play Soccer in Italy — AC Cugini Soccer, affiliated with Italian premier league club ACF Fiorentina, is conducting tryouts in Reston through December for guest spots on its special Italy tournament teams traveling to Florence, Italy, the Italian Adriatic, and Bologna, June 18-July 3, 2009. CYA Blaze is a U11 Boys Travel Team, based in Chantilly, playing in the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL). The team is professionally trained by Soccer Performance International. Potomac Inline Hockey (PIHI) is still accepting registrations for its Youth, High School, and Adult fall inline hockey season. The Chantilly Youth Association (CYA) Boys U17 Vikings Soccer team (players born after Aug. 1990) is seeking several players. (FAS), a non-profit organization, prides itself on the success of its program from the continued support of its volunteers. The Ron Bullock Volunteer of the Year award was created to recognize the one person who has made a substantial commitment to volunteering and improving the FAS program. This award is given to an individual that has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service over the course of 12 months.

FAS recognizes the significance of dedicated, hardworking volunteers and on Sunday, Feb. 10, FAS appreciation was expressed when volunteers gathered to be recognized for their valuable efforts. President John Carney presented this year’s recipient of the Ron Bullock Volunteer of the Year award to Chris Voss for her exceptional support of the adult softball program and its 10,000-plus participants. Chris, a long-time resident of Springfield, devotes countless hours to the promotion of adult softball in Fairfax County with particular emphasis on the challenge of revitalizing a declining women’s program.
