The active retirees program at Congregation Sha'are Shalom, 19357 Evergreen Mills Road, Leesburg, will host three monthly programs, beginning Monday, Oct. 20, with "Immigration and Public Policy in the United States," from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All are welcome. There is no charge. Attendees may bring a brown-bag lunch.

On Monday, Nov. 17, Shiri Rahamim, community shlicha (emissary) from the Embassy of Israel, will speak on Israel's contribution to medicine, technology and the media. On Monday, Dec. 15, Barry Nove, senior development officer of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, will speak on the Ellis Island experience. The National League of Junior Cotillions (NLJC), recently honored its Loudoun County Chapter with several awards for the 2008 business year. The local chapter has offered the Junior Cotillion program throughout the County for the past five years.

The three citations include, "Best Public Relations," "The ‘2000’ Club Award," having achieved total enrolment of more than 2,000 students and the "President’s Award of Excellence," directly recognizing the efforts of Jean Ann Michie, Loudoun director, for having personally shown superior efforts and results in all phases of the program.

The English Conversation Group is an informal conversation circle for non-native speakers to practice speaking English. This is not a class, but an opportunity to meet new people, share your culture and have fun. Only English will be spoken and all levels are welcome. Recommended for adults. The Loudoun Walking and Volkssport Club invites the public to check out its self-guided year-round walks. The club offers eight walks in the county that can be done any day at just about any time.
