Samantha Luffy of Centreville was selected to play a performer for University of Mary Washington production of "Elegies: A Song Cycle." Luffy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Luffy of Centreville and is a 2007 graduate of Westfield High School. A sophomore majoring in biology and pre-med, Luffy has appeared in the UMW productions of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and "The Tempest." She is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a box office assistant for Klein Theatre. In addition, she plays intramural basketball. Some of Finn’s other musicals include "A New Brain," "Falsettos," and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Finn has received numerous awards, including the 1991 Drama Desk Award for "Falsettoland" and the 2005 Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score for "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Performances were held Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in Klein Theatre.
Westfield High is having the free parent program, the "Bong Show," on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at Centreville Presbyterian Church. Leslie J. Churn, MA, Student Assistance Program and Alcohol and Drug Services Counselor, along with her colleagues, Karen Chase of Chantilly High School, and Leslie Roberts of Centreville High, Mountain View, and Liberty Middle School, will address trends of dangerous and illegal substances being used by local students. Suggestions as to how parents can be alerted to substance use by their children and their peers will be given and treatment resources will be provided. The presentation will include a PowerPoint presentation, a talk by a detective with the Organized Crime and Narcotics Division, and a display of alcohol and drug of paraphernalia. Offered by the Westfield Community Coalition and the Westfield PTSA in conjunction with Centreville and Chantilly Community Coalitions.

Jim Keane of Clifton, a senior majoring in finance, has been chosen to be a student ambassador for the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech. The Pamplin Ambassadors program is an organization composed of students who best represent the college. Students must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior in the Pamplin College of Business and have at least a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to be eligible. Applicants must also submit an application and resume, as well as undergo an interview to gain membership. Once a student is chosen as an ambassador, they remain an ambassador until they graduate.

Spanish, Korean and Chinese translators will be available as well as childcare for school-aged children.
The yearbook staff at Paul VI was recently awarded the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Medal for the 2007-2008 yearbook, Moving Images. The book also received All Columbian Honors for both Coverage and Photography. The National Scholastic Press Association awarded the book a First Class rating, with marks of distinction for Concept/Essentials and Photography.
The student staff attended a Jostens summer workshop in Williamsburg to begin planning the book and had yearbook class every day to create the all-color 385 page publication. The Moving Images theme was chosen to accentuate both the physical motion and emotional reactions that a school year includes. The book contained not only coverage of the 2007-2008 year, but also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Paul VI by including rewind boxes on some pages which included black & white pictures from past yearbooks.
The editors in chief of the book were Molly Synder and Christina Brainard, now freshmen at University of Delaware and Notre Dame, respectively. St. Andrew the Apostle School PTO provided the school community with a First Annual Fun Run and barbeque picnic to gear up for the 2008/2009 school year. The day’s events started with a 5K run or a 1-mile walk along the path of Union Mill and Balmoral. Fairfax County police officers assisted in making the run/walk safe for all participants. There was plenty of food, catered by Red Hot & Blue, along with ice cream from Nathan’s Ice Cream, and both were a huge success. DJ Brandon Lock provided a variety of music, and he didn’t have any problem getting everyone on the tennis courts for a few dances. Younger children spent most of their day jumping in the moon bounce. The Rev. John Kelly, Mrs. Glenda Sigg (principal), faculty and staff, families and friends joined in the afternoon’s festivities.
Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed a training program at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.
Chantilly High School and Chantilly Academy are the recipients of a $100,000 subgrant from Wright State University, College of Engineering and Computer Science, to enrich its engineering mathematics program. Chantilly Academy is the only high school participant in an engineering consortium of 16 colleges and universities that has been awarded a three-year National Science Foundation Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) Phase 3 grant, A National Model for Engineering Mathematics Education, totaling $2 million. Chantilly Academy is in its eighth year of offering pre-collegiate engineering education to students from more than 20 high schools in FCPS. In its efforts to enrich its engineering program, Chantilly will use the grant to redesign an existing 10-week freshman-year Introduction to Mathematics in Engineering Applications as a 36-week high school mathematics elective course, Engineering Mathematics. The advanced mathematics elective will be offered at Chantilly Academy in fall 2009. Grant funds will also provide instructor salary, classroom and laboratory resources and textbooks.
Chantilly Academy’s Girls Exploring Engineering program is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation for the 2008-09 school year. The program was established to significantly increase the number of young women enrolled in engineering courses at Chantilly Academy and the number of young women considering engineering careers; pursuing degrees through engineering school application and enrollment; and realizing subsequent careers in engineering.
The program is a yearlong elective course, Engineering Systems 1, for an all-female class. Last year, 12 of the 14 seniors were offered admission to schools of engineering in Virginia and in other states.

Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program.
