Mount Vernon Country Club won the championship flight of the Virginia state women’s team matches on October 11. They defeated Country Club of Virginia, 31-23, to gain their seventh overall victory since 1991 in the annual event. The match had been scheduled for September 11, but fog and rain caused the postponement.

Every club fields three, two-person teams, each of which plays its opponents in an eighteen-hole, four-ball match. A team records one point for each hole won. On a halved hole, the teams split the point. In the Mount Vernon-CCV final, Katie Cox and Joan Gardner won 12-6; Linda DiVall and Debbi Simpson halved, 9-9, and Shawn McCullough and Susan Podolsky won 10-8.

“It felt great to beat CCV on their home course,” said Debbie Simpson. “It’s also great to cap off a great year for the team with this win.”

Belle Haven Country Club’s team won the second flight in the Virginia team matches, defeating Roanoke’s Countryside Golf Club, 28 ½ - 25 ½. Players included Joanne Domson, Nancy Duncan, Joan Flippin, Mimi Hoffman, Heidi Smith, and Ruth Ann Verell.

Mount Vernon also won the top division in the 2008 Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association’s Team Matches last May. In that competition, thirty golf clubs in Maryland, Virginia, and the District contend in the region’s premier team championship. Mount Vernon has won the title eight of the last nine years.
