The Fairfax High School Theatre’s One Day Drama Camp will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Fairfax High School, 3501 Rebel Run, Fairfax. Westfield High will present the "Bong Show," a free program for parents, Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at Centreville Presbyterian Church. Westfield Alcohol and Drug Services Counselor Leslie J. Churn, plus Chantilly High’s Karen Chase and Leslie Roberts of Centreville High, Mountain View and Liberty Middle School, will discuss dangerous and illegal substances being used by local students. Suggestions on how parents can spot substance use by their children and their peers will be given, and treatment resources provided. Offered by the Westfield Community Coalition and the Westfield PTSA in conjunction with Centreville and Chantilly Community Coalitions.

Future business teachers from Indiana University of Pennsylvania visited Chantilly High School’s Business Department on Oct. 24. Chantilly was selected due to the outstanding reputation of its business department. The visit was coordinated by Linda Rounsavall from the office of NBEA (National Business Educators Association) headquartered in Reston. Chantilly High School Finance teacher and 2007-2008 Dulles Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year, Janice Findley, hosted the group of 10 future teachers who got a chance to experience the wide range of business classes available at Chantilly High School. Following a luncheon prepared by the Academy’s Culinary Arts Program, they took a tour of the Chantilly Academy of Engineering and Scientific Technology and Health and Human Services.

Andrew Barstow of Centreville, a senior majoring in aerospace engineering, is the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Alpha Company Executive Officer for the 2008-09 academic year.

Junior and senior corps of cadets interview for leadership positions in the spring semester and serve in their assigned position for the fall or spring semester of the following year. Cadet officers lead between 30 and 200 cadets.

Samantha Luffy of Centreville was selected to play a performer for University of Mary Washington production of "Elegies: A Song Cycle." Luffy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Luffy of Centreville and is a 2007 graduate of Westfield High School. Performances were held Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in Klein Theatre.

Alexis Reyes of Centreville recently completed a training program at the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. Working with Tire Kingdom, the Manassas Campus automotive program created a special five-week course to teach basic automotive skills and provide employment opportunities.

Applications for Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology are now available in all public middle schools and private schools. At each middle school, a designated counselor has applications, brochures, and newsletters about the admissions process. If a student cannot obtain an application from the middle school or private school, or if the student is home schooled, call the admissions office for an application at 703-876-5265. Applications will be due no later than Friday, Oct. 24.

Clifton Children's Academy is offering a new Accelerated Junior Kindergarten program. It is available to those children who may have just missed the cut-off date for public kindergarten, those children who may not have been quite ready to begin kindergarten this fall, or those children who are excelling on the academic front and are looking for even greater challenges. The program consists of language arts, early math, social studies and science, as well as foreign language and visual arts. The school is located on Compton Road in Centreville.
