Swim season right around the corner, Alexandria Aces, and a camp roundup

Swim Results

The NVSL summer swim season is right around the corner and the Gazette doesn’t want any child’s prowess in the pool to go unnoticed. To have swim team’s results posted in the Gazette each week, contact sports editor Mark Giannotto at mgiannotto@connectionnewspapers.com.

Alexandria Aces

The Alexandria Aces of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League kicks off their second season this Friday Night at Frank E. Mann Field in Four Mile Run Park with a special dedication of the field beginning at 6:30 p.m. City of Alexandria baseball and softball players will receive free admission if they wear their league uniform. If there’s inclement weather, the dedication will be moved to the Cora Kelly Recreation Center.

In addition, the Aces are still looking for host families to house some of their out-of-town college players. This summer approximately 30 young men from all over the United States will descend upon the Alexandria area for the summer to play baseball. From early June to early August they will play 42 games in 60 days. A host family is only asked to provide a warm bed and access to a washer and dryer. The Alexandria Aces handle the rest. To volunteer as a host parent/family contact Hilary Garner at 202 216-8304 or email Hilary at hgarner@ralaw.com

MV Basketball Camp

The Mount Vernon boys and girls basketball teams will be co-hosting the 2008 Major Basketball Camp. The camp will take place in the gym at Mount Vernon High School with two sessions (June 22-26 and June 29-July 3). There is a discount for attending both sessions.

The camp will be run by boys’ team head coach Alfonso Smith and girls’ head coach Terry Henderson. Smith was named Northern Region Coach of the Year this past winter, while Henderson was named National District coach of the year in his first year with the program. For more information, call 571-241-1486.

Lacrosse Leagues,/b>

In its 12th year of existence, the Alexandria Summer and Fall Lacrosse league is now taking registrations. The league is separated into two groups by age and skill level with games played every Sunday beginning June 14 at Woodley Hills Elementary School. College players and coaches will instruct and participate in play as well. The cost is just $60. Goalies are half price. For more information, contact coach Dale Nalls at 703-203-7357 or email him at majorslax@cox.net.

For area high school varsity players there is also the Alexandria Travel Lacrosse, which will be holding tryouts June 7 and June 8 beginning at 5 p.m. The purpose of this team is to provide an opportunity to compete against the best players in the country and in front of college coaches.
